Die legendäre spanische Death-Metal-Band AVULSED hat erste Details zu ihrer kommenden Veröffentlichung enthüllt, und eines steht fest: Dies wird nicht einfach nur ein weiteres Album. Tatsächlich dürfte es sich um eines der persönlichsten, ehrgeizigsten und einzigartigsten Projekte in der gesamten Karriere der Band handeln.
Unter dem Titel „Nordic Embryogenesis“ zollt die Band den tiefsten Wurzeln des skandinavischen Death Metal Tribut – mit einem Cover-Album, das seinesgleichen sucht. Man sollte hier keine Songs weltberühmter Bands oder die üblichen Klassiker erwarten, die jeder kennt. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine archäologische Reise in die urtümlichen Tiefen des schwedischen, finnischen und norwegischen Death Metal, bei der Titel von Kult-Demos und -EPs wieder zum Leben erweckt werden – Aufnahmen, die in vielen Fällen die einzigen Zeugnisse des Schaffens dieser Bands blieben.
Der erste Song wird am Freitag, dem 26. Juni, enthüllt. Von diesem Zeitpunkt an wird bis Ende August jede Woche ein weiteres Teil dieses düsteren Puzzles preisgegeben.
Einige dieser Bands verschwanden, noch bevor sie überhaupt ein vollwertiges Album veröffentlicht hatten; dennoch trugen sie alle dazu bei, den Sound und die Identität einer Szene zu prägen, die schließlich die Geschichte des Extreme Metal verändern sollte. Für AVULSED sind diese Songs Teil ihrer musikalischen DNA und bieten die einzigartige Gelegenheit, Werke wieder zum Leben zu erwecken, die zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit geraten waren.
Der Prozess der Rekonstruktion war eine gewaltige Aufgabe. In keinem der Fälle existierten Notenblätter, Transkriptionen oder sonstige Dokumentationen. Zahlreiche Gitarrenriffs, Schlagzeugmuster und Gesangslinien mussten Note für Note direkt von alten Aufnahmen entschlüsselt werden; in einigen Fällen galt es sogar, die Songtexte aus Quellen zu rekonstruieren, die kaum noch aufzutreiben waren. Eine wahre Ausgrabung in der Geschichte des Death Metal.
Doch damit enden die Überraschungen noch nicht.
In einem für die Metal-Szene praktisch beispiellosen Schritt werden die elf Songs von „Nordic Embryogenesis“ einzeln – einer pro Woche – und jeweils mit einem eigenen, exklusiven Artwork vorgestellt. Die Band gibt im Vorfeld weder die Tracklist noch die Namen der gecoverten Bands preis; so bleiben Spekulationen und Spannung bis zur endgültigen Veröffentlichung des Albums am 9. September (auf CD, 12"-LP, Kassette und digital über Xtreem Music) erhalten.
Einige der ausgewählten Bands dürften eingefleischten Old-School-Death-Metal-Fans ein Begriff sein. Andere wiederum werden selbst für die besessensten Sammler eine echte Entdeckung darstellen. Gemeinsam ist ihnen allen, dass sie auf die eine oder andere Weise jenen Geist und Sound mitgeprägt haben, aus dem AVULSED bei der Bandgründung im Sommer 1991 hervorging.

"One of the very first choices for this album was, without a doubt, FUNEBRE. This Finnish band released two demos in 1989 and 1990 before putting out their only full-length album in 1991, showcasing a darker, denser, and more oppressive vision of Death Metal than was common at the time. Their sound exuded a putrid and sickly atmosphere, with an almost Doom-like aura in places, clearly influenced by the earliest days of PARADISE LOST, while remaining firmly rooted in the same territory as bands like PURTENANCE, ABHORRENCE, and AUTOPSY.
The song we chose, "Expunging Mortalities", comes from their second demo, released in 1990, and never made it onto the album. In fact, I have always felt that this demo represents the true essence of FUNEBRE far better, capturing all the filth, heaviness, and darkness that defined the band. Unfortunately, much of that magic was lost on the album itself, most likely due to the production by Timo Tolkki, which significantly softened the band's sound and moved it away from how it should have sounded in the first place.
Furthermore, vocalist Jari Heinonen has always been one of my main influences within Death Metal. Perhaps, when listening to this version and comparing it to the original, you'll be able to spot some similarities that I've never tried to hide".

"The CARBONIZED cover was another absolute certainty from the very beginning. There was never any doubt that it had to be included. Ever since their debut demo in 1989, this band completely blew my mind, and their follow-up 7"EP "No Canonization" from 1990 was the ultimate culmination of that early sound. Their next demo and debut album were still very good, but by then they had already begun shifting towards a more Grind-oriented and experimental style, a direction they pushed much further on their second and third albums.
The band featured Matti Kärki, who would later become the vocalist of DISMEMBER & CARNAGE after leaving CARBONIZED shortly after this EP. It also included Lars Rosenberg, who joined ENTOMBED that same year before later playing with MONASTERY and briefly with THERION ("Theli"). Following "No Canonization", CARBONIZED welcomed Christofer Johnsson, mastermind behind THERION and drummer Piotr Wawrzeniuk, who would also become a member of THERION for several albums.
What set CARBONIZED apart from the rest of the Swedish Death Metal scene was their twisted songwriting and their frantic, highly technical approach, giving them a personality all of their own. As I mentioned, later line-up changes led the band into increasingly avant-garde and psychedelic territory, eventually moving them far away from the savage Death Metal that made their early recordings so unique".
