Obituary - Inked In Blood
Florida's death metallers Obituary need no introduction, one of the great pioneers of the style that eradicated in the late 80s, their first album trilogy stand firmly as classics and so far never been surpassed by the band. Since they came back from their hiatus in the beginning of 2000s the band has being enjoying a great fans response from their efforts. 2014 is the is the year Obituary released their latest beast, Inked in Blood, their 9th full length album and you can say that they have not lost touch with their earliest roots, John Tardy's vocals is undeniably recognizable among the death metal community and the gritty presence of it is in this album from the very first second the music kicks in. The formula has not changed much through the years, crude vocals, raw distortions, sickening guitar riffs and classical old school death metal beats, but it also has some hints of modern sequences and some parts of it feels like trying to escape the normal patterns of death metal, sounding not like, but close to hard core, not at all to the point of spoiling it. The slow creepy parts are also very present, being characteristic of the band, making the songs flow nice with a few atmospheric and spaced-out solos. The good thing about it, is that the album feels right and because Obituary's music could lack variety, Inked in Blood doesn't sound monotonous and it is very much an "unpleasant" hearing, pleasing the listener who is looking for simply pure heaviness with no added bullshit. It's has to be mentioned that it doesn't come close to their classics, but not too far either, it is a strong reminder that the old Obituary still around, more experienced but with less testosterone. The album cover has to be mentioned, it's a fantastic piece of work, the limbless torso with the word Obituary engraved on its chest just sends out the message that the band doesn't fuck about and it is just as brilliant as their old covers. So, there you go, 25 years since the release of their debut Slowly we Rot, Obituary still going strong, playing fiercely their angry riffs and I am very glad they still around. Being an old fan or maybe a new one, you might have a rough idea what the album might sound like, and man, they do deliver just that, you just have to sit back and enjoy it.
