Cirith Gorgor - Der Untergang...... / Победа!!!" (LP)

Neithan: It has been released for a while, but since I have no vinyl turn table (yet) it took a while before I obtained a digital promo from the band. ‘Der Untergang... ’ is the most recent album by Dutch black metal pride Cirith Gorgor. It is the fifth full length by this band that has been active since 1993 already (!) and the album is a concept trilogy about the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the most epic battles in the history of mankind. Before all nitwits might think this is once more a black metal band that wants to provoke by viewing things from a doubtful political view: think again, because band leader and guitarist Marchosias is a history freak concerning this battle and spent not less than six years on this concept. If there is a view on this album at all, it is from the Soviet side (read the lyrics about 19-11-1942). Musicwise, the most obvious thing is the return of vocalist Nimroth, who was replaced on predecessor ‘Cirith Gorgor’ by drummer Levithmong.
Cirith Gorgor: it has always been fast black metal: furious and without compromises. The intro ‘The Road to Stalingrad’ is more epic than the band has ever been and is interspersed with samples of war sounds. After that, the album/trilogy starts with the first part of the musical trilogy and those who know the band since long recognize this music as the closing song of ‘Cirith Gorgor’, a song that was as a matter of fact called ‘Der Untergang’, the title of this album and on this album also the title of the outro. Now it can be heard obviously that Marchosias spent so many years on working out the concept, because all is worked out into the slightest detail, including voice-overs and samples of war machines: mighty! The new version, with a different title (I suspect ‘The Battle Of Stalingrad’ since my digital version has seven tracks and the vinyl album, which I can’t play at home 11 tracks) outclasses the old performance in every aspect, both regarding musical performance and production. In the beginning of the strophe I wrote that Cirith has always been fast black metal: it still is, but more and more has the band brought in heavy and menacing passages, which most certainly enriches the music and its impact. The good old fashioned insane speed is especially back in the closing part of the trilogy (once more I am not sure about the titles, but my guess is a combination of ‘A Tidal Wave from the East’ and ‘Enemy at the Gates’, possibly combined with ‘The Battle of Berlin’). Absolutely astonishing! This album is really great: all worked out into the smallest detail, including the production, and building up to a climax as a trilogy should do.
The icing on the cake is the wonderful artwork and extra info about the battle of the artwork of this vinyl piece of art. It is really a bonus just to buy this vinyl. Altogether the trilogy lasts 35 minutes and this is one of those great albums with a comparable short duration. And if colleague Richard G. thought ’Cirith Gorgor’ was their best album yet, this one outclasses that one both in song writing and production (who said black metal needs a poor production: this one proves that opinion 666% wrong). And all this results in a very high grade, also because of the extra work put into this. The battle was epic and this album does justice: a highlight in the history of these long serving Dutch veterans (a nice word in this context) . Don’t I have any point of criticism? Yes, the fact that this one will not be released on a CD, because this has to be heard. Had I heard this album in December, than for sure it would have been in my yearlist of 2011!
