Am 15.03.2008 war ich mal wieder in London um die lokale Metalscene abzuchecken. Wie ich von Pierre, seines Zeichens Insider und Promotor diverser Metalevents in London, erfahren hatte, sollte an diesem Abend in der geilen Location Underworld in Camden ein Metalkonzert stattfinden.
Dort angekommen hieß es erstmal Schlange stehen am Einlass. Von der riesigen Menge Banger die dort versammelt waren, erfuhr ich dann dass die polnische Kultband KAT dort aufspielen wird. Diese 1980 in Polen gegründete Band hat dort immer noch absoluten Kultstatus. Da man damals allerdings noch nicht in den Westen reisen durfte, sind die Jungs hierzulande weitgehend unbekannt geblieben. Es dauerte nicht lange bis ich realisierte dass hier mindestens 99% der Fans Polen waren. Na ja was soll's dachte ich, wird trotzdem schön krachen heute Abend...
Mit etwas Glück ergatterte ich noch eines der letzten Tickets und fand Einlass in die heiligen Hallen des Underworld Clubs. Schnell noch ein paar Bier getankt, einen kurzen Schnack mit Shrapnel/ Ian (Deströyer 666, Adorior, Razor of Occam), Matt (Razor of Occam) und Melissa (Adorior) gehalten und schon sollte der Spaß los gehen. Auf eine Vorband hatte man verzichtet und so wurden die Polen von der Menge lautstark gefordert. Nach einem kurzen Intro starteten die Polen vor vollem Haus und mit mächtig fettem Sound. Dass Originalsänger Roman Kostrzewski wieder mit von der Partie war, hatte den Kultfaktor für echte KAT Fans noch deutlich erhöht. Spielte man zu Beginn noch (scheinbar) englische Songs und machte seine Ansagen ebenfalls auf Englisch, so sollte sich das ändern als KAT erkannten das sie quasi hier ein Heimspiel hatten, fortan redeten und spielten sie (scheinbar) nur noch auf polnisch. Verständlicherweise war das für uns Nicht-Polen dann nicht so wirklich toll. Die polnischen Fans waren extrem besoffen und ebenso aggressiv. Musikalisch war das ganze ganz nett und bewegte sich zwischen old school Metal und schmalzigen, polnisch gesungenen Balladen. Nach knapp 2 Stunden war dann erstmal Schluss, die total begeisterten Fans konnten jedoch noch zwei Zugaben herausholen. Somit war dann um 22:15 Uhr der Abend im Underground zu Camden gelaufen. Als Fazit bleibt festzuhalten dass der Auftritt Nicht-Polen nicht wirklich begeistern konnte, dazu haben auch die unangenehm aggressiven polnischen Metalfans beigetragen.

Mit Ian, Matt und Melissa ging es dann im strömenden Regen ca. 800 Meter weiter in die Bar "The Purple Turtle" wo gerade die französischen Grinder INHUMATE, als letzte von vier Bands, ihren Set spielten. Vor knapp 50 Leuten prügelten die Jungs ihren ultrafetten brutalo Grind herunter dass es nur so krachte. Shouter Olivier schrie, grunzte und schwitzte was das Zeug hielt. Die Fans ihrerseits moshten, bangten und schwitzen ebenfalls mächtig. Zum Schluss wurden die Fans noch eingeladen die Bühne zu entern und zusammen mit der Band einen fetten Moshpit abzuliefern (siehe Video). So macht Metal Spaß! Schade das wir erst so spät dazu stießen, wir waren uns einig, dass der Abend im Purple Turtle deutlich besser geworden wäre als mit KAT im Underground.

Zum Abschluss folgte noch die After Show Party. Bei einer infernalischen brutalo Death Metal Disco, serviert von einem weiblichen DJ, wurden noch etliche Guiness geleert und Kontakte geknüpft. Als ich dieses mal auch noch das Glück hatte die letzte U-Bahn zu erwischen, war der Abend nahezu perfekt.

I was back in London to check the local metal scene. As I had learned from Pierre, insider and promoter of various metal events in London (StrataNaël PromotioNs), a metal concert was taking place in Camden’s Underworld on the evening.
As I began to queue up at the entrance I learned from the big crowd of bangers that the Polish cult band KAT was playing this evening.
This band was founded in Poland in 1980 and has still an absolute cult status there. Since it was not allowed to travel to the west back then at that time, the boys remained largely unknown in the west. I soon realised that at least 99% of the fans were Poles here. “Well,” I thought, “it will nevertheless be a heavy party tonight”..
With a little bit of luck, I got hold of one of the last tickets and delved into the sacred halls of the Underworld club. Straight after a couple of beers, a short chat with Shrapnel/ Ian (Deströyer666, Adorior, RazorOfOccam), Matt (RazorOfOccam) and Melissa (Adorior), the gig began.
Without a support band, the Poles were loudly granted by the crowd. KAT started after a short intro in front of a full house and with powerfully fat sound. The original cult singer Roman Kostrzewski is back in the band which considerably increases the appeal for all real KAT fans. KAT began playing songs in English and were talking in English to their crowd, but soon KAT acknowledged they were having here a “home match” virtually, and soon switched to Polish-only songs / Polish chat with the crowd, quite logically. Though this move was understandable enough, the rest of the gig was then, for us, non-Poles, a bit more difficult to understand!
Polish fans were extremely stoned and just as aggressive.
KAT was musically quite nice on the whole, alternating between old-school metal and schmaltzy ballads sung in Polish. After almost 2 hours it was over but the extremely enthusiastic fans were however delivered a 2 song encore.
By 10.15 the evening was thus over and by that time taking the homeward tube was the only ‘Underground’ experience available.
I cannot say that the concert really filled non-Poles with enthusiasm, and the aggressive behaviour of drunken Polish metal fans also unpleasantly contributed to it.
With Ian, Matt and Melissa we then went through torrential rain for approx. 800 metres to the "The Purple Turtle" bar & venue where the French Grinder INHUMATE were currently playing their set, as the headliner of the night (four bands were playing on the night).
In front of a modest audience, INHUMATE fired their extremely brutal grind with shouter Olivier screaming, grunting and sweating like hell. For their part, fans also moshed and sweat powerfully and the fans were invited by the end of the show to invade the stage and to start there a big moshpit together with the band (see video).
That’s was fuckin real anarchy and a really funny metal mess followed!
We all agreed it was a pity to have only arrived quite late at the Purple Turtle, considering that our evening spent at the Purple Turtle would have been considerably better than watching KAT in the Underworld.

The show was followed by an after-party at the Purple Turtle with an infernal brutal death metal disco, delivered by a female DJ, a considerable number of beers were dutifully emptied as people were socialising and mingling along in the night. I was lucky to catch the last tube, with an almost evening perfect according to me.
